Abstract
Dr. Janine Sytsma's African Art, Museums and Exhibition Practices Seminar studied this object. Students in the course highlighted artifacts, including this one in "Y'akɔfa: Ruptures and Renewals in Art from Ghana and Nigeria" in spring 2023 at the Fayetteville Public Library.
Here is a summary of their findings: Common Akan Adinkra symbol for sankofa, which translates to "go back and pick/get it." The symbol took new meaning in post-colonial Ghanian politics as artists, writers, playwrights, and more began reviving indigenous traditions the previous colonial government had attempted to eradicate.
