Description

Ceramic amphora.

Ring base: hollow, high foot - flat at top with short stem; ovid body contracting to narrow neck; vertical strap handles attached at neck and rising to rim, then down to shoulder; the decoration is done in the red-figure technique consisting of: two female heads in profile and palmettes and scrolls on shoulder: neck has vertical chevrons on either side of handles and there are two palmettes on either side of neck; the foot and base of body have large black bands and handles are almost all black and a band of chain loops near base of body; white clay has been used to put decorative touches of necklaces, hair, and caps to the women's profiles.

Amphoras were used to store wine, olive oil, honey, water, etc.
